This course is suitable for those who have some experience in drawing but would like to develop their art into working with oil paints. Over ten weeks and several painting projects using individual feedback, advice and mentoring in a small group environment I will cover the practicalities of working with oils as well as advice for good practice and we will explore different approaches that can inform the choices we make with paint.
I have personally been working with oil paints for more than forty years and think it is a great medium, very versatile, and uneccessarily shrouded in a kind of mystique which can put people off.
I will be talking through processes and materials as well as giving practical demonstrations about how to work with oils. We will work over several directed learning projects including still life subjects and portrait, with the aim that by the end of the course you will be comfortable and familiar with oils and have ideas for your own further exploration. The classes will be conducted using live feedback discussion, video demonstrations and looking at examples from art history to give us ideas of the possibilities.
Subjects covered will include - surfaces for painting on; ways of starting a painting; different colour palettes; brushes; solvents and mediums; drawing with paint; tonal values and more.
I will also cover the practicalities and good techniques for using oil paint in life drawing situations.
